How to Properly Meditate: 4 Tips for Beginnners

Historians believe that meditation was practiced dating back to 3000 BCE. The word, “meditate” comes from the Latin word, “meditatum.” The Latin meaning of the word is “to ponder.”

1. Start With Deep Breathing

If you’ve never meditated before, then it’s ideal to start off slow. You don’t need to sit in one place for 30 minutes to an hour at a time to meditate (although advanced meditation can certainly lead to this). Instead, start by taking deep breaths.

You can do this no matter where you are. As you take your deep breaths, count to ten. If you can block out the noise around you and in your mind and focus on your breathing and counting, then you’re already meditating.

2. Stay Grounded With a Mantra

A good mantra can help you stay focused while meditating. Using a mantra is a good option for those whose minds tend to wander as they meditate. This is normal.

As you try to focus on your meditation and the present moment, you’re suddenly thinking about what you’ll cook for dinner or your presentation due at work this week.

3. Meditate While Moving

Who said meditation requires a quiet space and hours of sitting in one place? You can meditate no matter where you are, what you’re doing, or what’s around you. Meditation is being mindful of the present moment.

You can meditate while doing certain things that allow your mind to go into autopilot. For example, you can meditate while cooking, while cleaning, and more. While doing these things, turn your mind off from all the worries and stress and focus on your breathing.

4. Join a Meditation Event

Guided meditation is beneficial for both beginner and experienced meditators. Guided meditation can be done in person or even online. This type of meditation is led by an instructor or teacher. Having someone to guide you through the process of meditation when first starting out can be a great way to learn how to meditate properly.
